A Brief History of Cursillo

The earliest beginnings of Cursillo took place in Mallorca Spain prior to WWII in the Roman Catholic Church. Under the leadership of their Bishop, a group of laymen were seeking a means of involving more men in the activities of the church and evangelization of their community. Using the basic principle of "Make a Friend, Be a friend, Bring a friend to Christ " they formed small groups to educate "friends" in the community in the basic tenets of the faith, and encourage them to develop a relationship with the Lord. WWII interrupted their plans, but soon after the war they began to seek a faster way of building the small groups to support each other. The Three Day Cursillo weekend was created to fill this need, and has been successful through out the world ever since. Cursillo came to the United Sates through Spanish airmen in Waco Texas in 1957. It soon spread to the Episcopal church under sponsorship of the Roman Catholic church. Since then it has spread throughout the nation, in every State and, under several other names, to many other denominations.

The movement came to the Diocese of Southern Virginia in 1978, with the help of Cursillistas from North Carolina. Blessed by the movement and wanting to share it with others, Cursillistas from this diocese ventured to the Virgin Islands in 2002, to serve on the team for that diocese’s first Cursillo weekend.

While the Three-Day Weekend is typically a wonderful experience, the Cursillo Method involves much more than just putting on weekends. In the hands of com¬mitted clergy and lay Christians, Cursillo has emerged as a mature instrument to empower the ministry of the laity.
